Colonial rooflines and garages in East Greenbush
A two-story colonial with an attached garage really has two rooflines: the main eave up high and the garage eave below it. Start with those two. Outlining every gable and dormer looks busy from the street and adds linear feet you pay for. A row of C9s on the front eaves and the garage reads cleanly from the end of the driveway, and you can add the porch or a front tree next year.
Second-story eaves are ladder work at height, which is part of what the installer prices. Bigger homes with steep pitches may need roof work rather than ladder work. A photo of the front of the house answers most of those questions before anyone visits. More on bulbs and fastening on our roofline Christmas lights page.
On a subdivision street where the houses share a style, warm white C9s on the roofline plus one lit tree is the look that holds up. Color is fine too. Mixing warm white and color on the same house rarely is.
HOA sign-off in newer East Greenbush subdivisions
Some of the newer neighborhoods in town come with a homeowners association. Rules vary, so read yours before you book, especially if you're thinking about permanent Christmas lights. A track mounted on the fascia stays on the house all year, and some associations treat that as an exterior change that needs approval. Seasonal lights go up with clips and come down in January, which is a much easier conversation with a board.
Timers for East Greenbush commuters
If you commute across the river to Albany, you leave in the dark and get home in the dark for most of December. Put the lights on a timer plugged into an outdoor GFCI outlet and they're on before you pull in. With an outside outlet, the install itself can usually happen while you're at work. Mention any gate, dog or locked garage outlet in your request.
If your only outdoor outlet is on the back deck, say so. The installer can plan the cord run before arriving instead of hunting for power on install day.
Trees and shrubs on older streets vs new builds in East Greenbush
Older East Greenbush streets have mature trees, and one big lit maple or spruce out front can carry the whole yard. In newer subdivisions the trees are young, so the foundation shrubs and the walkway do more of the work. Mini lights on shrubs, a lit lamp post, and the roofline above make a full display without a lift.
