Porches and older homes in the Ballston Spa village center
The streets off Front Street and Milton Avenue are full of older houses built close to the sidewalk, many with a front porch that's the best feature on the house. Light that porch first. Garland with mini lights along the rail, lit columns and a wreath on the door read beautifully from the street, and they're at eye level, where people actually look. Add a C9 run on the porch roof and the front gable and most village houses are done.
Older homes bring their own questions:
- Outlets. Some village houses have no outdoor outlet at all, or one on the back. Ask an electrician about an outdoor GFCI outlet before the install.
- Trim and gutters. Clips should grip the gutter lip or shingle edge, never nails in old wood trim.
- Parking. The installer's truck parks on the street, so on a narrow block, morning installs are easier.

Outside the village, the Town of Ballston, including Burnt Hills and Ballston Lake, mixes older farmhouses with newer subdivisions on bigger lots. The job here is usually the roofline plus the yard: a few mature trees, a row of shrubs along the walk and a long driveway. Holiday lighting for homes in Milton
The village straddles two towns, and the Milton side and beyond runs from village streets into newer subdivisions and country lots. Country lots mean long driveways, and a lit driveway entrance helps guests find you on a dark road in December. Keep stake lights back from the edge so the plow doesn't take them out.
The newer subdivisions are simpler: a C9 roofline, a couple of wrapped ornamental trees and a lit front walk. On a typical two-story home that's a standard ladder job, and the same goes for takedown in January.
